3 kW Solar System

A 3 kW Solar system is a popular choice for smaller households with modest energy consumption who want to reduce their carbon footprint.  These systems will provide enough output for around 50-70% of household energy needs.  A 3kw solar system is a good introductory point for the uninitiated who might be intimidated by larger and costlier systems.  If the system performs to satisfaction, it is easy to add more panels for increased output in the future.

A 3kW solar system can be installed quickly on most roofs or other surfaces and can start producing electricity for your household immediately.  There are no ongoing costs involving maintenance or operations so your system comes with a peace of mind at no additional price.

Solar Energy

Australians have long been enjoying the heat aspect of solar energy, having established a global reputation as sun-worshipping, tanned skin beach bums.  This stereotype is not accidental as the sunny and hot climate of the country has naturally produced a collective culture whose very identity is linked to the golden orb in the sky.

In recent years, Australia has begun to embrace solar energy in a different way, by utilising its radiant, or light, energy to power homes, businesses and more.  Solar panel systems convert solar energy into usable electricity and are becoming more widely used in a country whose climate is ideal for such technology.  Exciting advances in the science and technology of harnessing solar energy promise to make switching to solar easier and more affordable for everyone in the very near future.

Energy Independence With A 5kW Solar System

With energy costs rising at a much faster rate than inflation, it is more timelier than ever to switch to solar.  For complete independence from the utility grid, the optimal choice for your home or small business is a 5kW Solar System.  In most cases, this system will adequately cover all of your home’s energy needs and can be sized to fit most roofs.

Utility companies are currently undergoing renovations and upgrades adding up to billions of dollars.  While electricity rates have already been rising steadily for decades, the costs of these improvements will be reflected in even higher rates. A 5kW solar system will give you freedom from the volatility of utility prices, by putting your entire home’s energy production in your hands.  There are no ongoing maintenance costs with a 5kW solar system and with a long performance life, these systems provide the security of predictable energy pricing without any hassles.

Outdoor Living From the Car to the House

Outdoor Living isn’t just Composting, Camping and Hand Powered Products in the wilderness- it’s all the fun and frivolity you can have from the outdoors in.  Now that’s it getting darker earlier, you may have started playing a not so fun game called “Find the right key to your front door”. For me, it’s a fairly regular game that can extend from one to ten minutes.

The solution may just be the Solar Charged Flashlight Keyring.  Its two bright LEDs shine a beam over 25 metres and lasts for up to three hours following 30 minutes in the sun.

But if you’re struggling to even find the keys in your bag, the Eco LED Koala Torch  may be the ticket. Running on battery or dynamo power, this little friend will light your way on those dark nights.

However if you’re scrambling to even find the torch, a Solar Sun Jar will lead you to your porch like a lighthouse to the shore. Available in orange, pink and blue – the Solar Sun Jar charges itself on the sun during the day and lights up automatically at night. Smart.

And if you’re still unable to see where you’re going, maybe it’s time to go old school and get a flaming torch like this fine gentleman: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fGcffEQDf4o/TZtWDYYh2hI/AAAAAAAAGIw/3YXuvpEbrpQ/s400/son_of_frankenstein_Igor-torch.jpg

Eco Products for the Kids: How to Teach Children about Climate Change

How many Eco Products are out there for kids? How do you get kids, let alone adults, to understand climate change? Where can they learn how to make a difference to our planet? The answer may be as simple as a picture book.

We like Caren Trafford’s ‘It’s a Climate for Change’ because it educates and entertains primary aged kids on what weather is, why it’s getting so hot and bothered and what we can do to help.

For the toddlers, there’s ‘Let’s Save Water’.  Not only is a great tool to teach your kids how to read, it provides simple tips that parents and kids can use to save water.

And for babies, there’s the Little Monkey book – a super-soft cloth book made from recycled fleece and cotton.

For other greenie children’s books, Energy Saving Products and Eco Friendly Products, check out Todae’s Eco Store.

And if you think climate change is a dark topic to read to children about, consider the alternatives: http://nomorefriends.net/.  Climate change may be a daunting topic, but it’s nothing compared to the existential crisis that is death (especially if you’re a lonely dinosaur).

Hoping you’re learning something new every day,

Grace

Gifts Prevent People Being Ostracized

Cadbury billboards lately have been announcing next to a tall box of Cadbury Favourites ‘What to bring when you’re told not to bring a thing’.

It’s confusing when a host instructs guests not to bring a gift to a social gathering, be it a bag of chips or unique gifts like a graduation present. This issue becomes increasingly complex depending on the degree of formality of the social gathering – from the lower stress home hangout to the more formal birthday party. The social conventionalist inside frets ‘What if they’re just saying that? What if everyone else brings something and I walk through the door empty handed? Will they think I’m cheep or rude?’.

Cadbury’s poke at the underlying psychology of this social etiquette is intriguing. It taps into a sensitive part of the human nature that is in all human beings, that is … ‘What will people think of me?’

But where does this ‘caring what people think’ stem from? Carlin Flora of Psychology Today suggests it originates from humans primitively being social creatures with the basic need to belong. Flora continues that social anxiety is just an instinctive reaction to the threat of being ostracized.

Therefore, the underlying psychology surrounding the social etiquette of gift giving might have been born out of this social anxiety. By humans bringing gifts to gatherings, they are simply doing so to ward off the threat of being excluded by their host and friends.

So, at one’s next social gathering where the host flippantly states not to bring something, one must ask themselves if they will bring a gift following basic human nature or go against the grain and stand as an individual.

Eco Products for your Sweet Tooth

Buying Eco Friendly Productscan sound like a chore, a way of going out of your way to tick the ‘greenie’ box. But just because you’re  purchasing  Eco Products doesn’t mean you’re foregoing quality or, very importantly, taste.  Organic chocolate has been on the brain, particularly why it’s better for you, the environment and its producers.

We’re a fan of Loving Earth Chocolate, available from Todae’s Eco Store, because their philosophy is all about health, sutainability and fair practice.

For starters, their chocolate is minimally processed and contains no artificial additives to mess with your body.  Add to that, they’re produced without synthetic fertilizers, chemical herbicides or pesticides.  Plus their crops are cultivated in a way to avoid soil erosion and support water conservation.  That is, by using traditional permaculture techniques.  Nice!

Another win is that their chocolate is produced according to Fair Trade standards whilst re-investing in community infrastructure such as health and education services. That’s what we call guilt-free chocolate.
